Update: Added some more information from Ghostcrawler about the Cosby Suite.

Employee Response to Bobby Kotick's Statement
The Verge has posted an employee response to Bobby Kotick's letter.

While we are pleased to see that our collective voices — including an open letter with thousands of signatures from current employees — have convinced leadership to change the tone of their communications, this response fails to address critical elements at the heart of employee concerns.

Activision Blizzard’s response did not address the following:

    • The end of forced arbitration for all employees.
    • Worker participation in oversight of hiring and promotion policies.
    • The need for greater pay transparency to ensure equality.
    • Employee selection of a third party to audit HR and other company processes.

Today’s walkout will demonstrate that this is not a one-time event that our leaders can ignore. We will not return to silence; we will not be placated by the same processes that led us to this point.

This is the beginning of an enduring movement in favor of better labor conditions for all employees, especially women, in particular women of color and transgender women, nonbinary people, and other marginalized groups.

We expect a prompt response and a commitment to action from leadership on the points enumerated above, and look forward to maintaining a constructive dialogue on how to build a better Activision Blizzard for all employees.

Today, we stand up for change. Tomorrow and beyond, we will be the change.

    Additional Information on Cosby Suite
Kotaku published some additional information about the Cosby Suite. It also confirms that Afrasiabi was terminated for his misconduct in 2020.

Reddit users have also posted about related tweets that aren't in the article.

An employee brought these 2013 events to our attention in June 2020," a spokesperson for Activision Blizzard told Kotaku when asked about the “Cosby Suite” images and allegations against Afrasiabi. “We immediately conducted our own investigation and took corrective action. At the time of the report, we had already conducted a separate investigation of Alex Afrasiabi and terminated him for his misconduct in his treatment of other employees.

    Creatures and NPCs

    • Towering Exterminator and Konthrogz the Obliterator will now re-appear in a central part of Korthia if they manage to fall off the side of the world.

    Dungeons and Raids

    • Sanctum of Domination
      • Remnant of Ner'zhul
        • Adjusted the recast of Orb of Torment to ensure it is cast more consistently on Mythic difficulty.

        • Adjusted the recast of Malevolence to ensure it is cast more consistently on Mythic difficulty.
      • Kel'Thuzad
        • No longer maintains his mana between phases, and now resets to 100 mana when he exits the Phylactery Phase.
          • Developers’ note: This should alleviate issues where pushing into a new phase at various mana levels was causing bad timings.

    Items and Rewards

    • Broker Ko'tul in the Great Vault room will now exchange excess Anima for caches of tradeskill goods, including Korthite Crystals.
      • Developers’ note: As players have traversed the more Anima-rich lands of Korthia, some players are finding that they no longer have new unlocks to spend it on. We do not intend to add significant new one-time Anima sinks in Chains of Domination, and want to provide an outlet for players who are content with their choice of Covenant but have purchased everything that is offered.
    • The re-purchase price of the Covenant armor set granted as quest rewards from the Shadowland campaign have been increased to reflect the greater abundance of Anima.

    • Players will now receive credit for “To the Vault” if they ride the flayedwing from Keeper's Respite to the Vault of Secrets.

I want to recognize and thank all those who have come forward in the past and in recent days. I so appreciate your courage. Every voice matters - and we will do a better job of listening now, and in the future.

Our initial responses to the issues we face together, and to your concerns, were, quite frankly, tone deaf.

It is imperative that we acknowledge all perspectives and experiences and respect the feelings of those who have been mistreated in any way. I am sorry that we did not provide the right empathy and understanding.

Many of you have told us that active outreach comes from caring so deeply for the Company. That so many people have reached out and shared thoughts, suggestions, and highlighted opportunities for improvement is a powerful reflection of how you care for our communities of colleagues and players – and for each other. Ensuring that we have a safe and welcoming work environment is my highest priority. The leadership team has heard you loud and clear.

We are taking swift action to be the compassionate, caring company you came to work for and to ensure a safe environment. There is no place anywhere at our Company for discrimination, harassment, or unequal treatment of any kind. We will do everything possible to make sure that together, we improve and build the kind of inclusive workplace that is essential to foster creativity and inspiration.

I have asked the law firm WilmerHale to conduct a review of our policies and procedures to ensure that we have and maintain best practices to promote a respectful and inclusive workplace. This work will begin immediately. The WilmerHale team will be led by Stephanie Avakian, who is a member of the management team at WilmerHale and was most recently the Director of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission’s Division of Enforcement.

We encourage anyone with an experience you believe violates our policies or in any way made you uncomfortable in the workplace to use any of our many existing channels for reporting or to reach out to Stephanie. She and her team at WilmerHale will be available to speak with you on a confidential basis and can be reached at or 202-247-2725. Your outreach will be kept confidential. Of course, NO retaliation will be tolerated.

We are committed to long-lasting change. Effective immediately, we will be taking the following actions:

    • Employee Support. We will continue to investigate each and every claim and will not hesitate to take decisive action. To strengthen our capabilities in this area we are adding additional senior staff and other resources to both the Compliance team and the Employee Relations team.
    • Listening Sessions. We know many of you have inspired ideas on how to improve our culture. We will be creating safe spaces, moderated by third parties, for you to speak out and share areas for improvement.
    • Personnel Changes. We are immediately evaluating managers and leaders across the Company. Anyone found to have impeded the integrity of our processes for evaluating claims and imposing appropriate consequences will be terminated.
    • Hiring Practices. Earlier this year I sent an email requiring all hiring managers to ensure they have diverse candidate slates for all open positions. We will be adding compliance resources to ensure that our hiring managers are in fact adhering to this directive.
    • In-game Changes. We have heard the input from employee and player communities that some of our in-game content is inappropriate. We are removing that content.
    • Your well-being remains my priority and I will spare no company resource ensuring that our company has the most welcoming, comfortable, and safe culture possible.

You have my unwavering commitment that we will improve our company together, and we will be the most inspiring, inclusive entertainment company
    in the world.

    Yours sincerely,

We, the undersigned, agree that the statements from Activision Blizzard, Inc. and their legal counsel regarding the DFEH lawsuit, as well as the subsequent internal statement from Frances Townsend, are abhorrent and insulting to all that we believe our company should stand for. To put it clearly and unequivocally, our values as employees are not accurately reflected in the words and actions of our leadership.

We believe these statements have damaged our ongoing quest for equality inside and outside of our industry. Categorizing the claims that have been made as “distorted, and in many cases false” creates a company atmosphere that disbelieves victims. It also casts doubt on our organizations’ ability to hold abusers accountable for their actions and foster a safe environment for victims to come forward in the future. These statements make it clear that our leadership is not putting our values first. Immediate corrections are needed from the highest level of our organization.

Our company executives have claimed that actions will be taken to protect us, but in the face of legal action — and the troubling official responses that followed — we no longer trust that our leaders will place employee safety above their own interests. To claim this is a “truly meritless and irresponsible lawsuit,” while seeing so many current and former employees speak out about their own experiences regarding harassment and abuse, is simply unacceptable.

We call for official statements that recognize the seriousness of these allegations and demonstrate compassion for victims of harassment and assault. We call on Frances Townsend to stand by her word to step down as Executive Sponsor of the ABK Employee Women’s Network as a result of the damaging nature of her statement. We call on the executive leadership team to work with us on new and meaningful efforts that ensure employees — as well as our community — have a safe place to speak out and come forward.

We stand with all our friends, teammates, and colleagues, as well as the members of our dedicated community, who have experienced mistreatment or harassment of any kind. We will not be silenced, we will not stand aside, and we will not give up until the company we love is a workplace we can all feel proud to be a part of again. We will be the change.

        • [With weekly maintenance in each region] Ring of Fire (PvP Talent) will reapply its damage over time effect less frequently while standing within the ring.
          • Developers’ note: In situations where players were stunned or rooted inside the ring, the damage dealt by Ring of Fire was higher than intended. There will now be a cooldown before the fire reapplies its damage over time.
    • Priest
      • Shadow
        • [With weekly maintenance in each region] Void Volley (PvP Talent) damage reduced by ~15%.
    • Warrior
      • [With weekly maintenance in each region] Intervene's duration reduced to 3 seconds while engaged in combat with enemy players (was 6 seconds).
        • Developers’ note: Warriors group defensive toolkit is currently outshining other specs, by reducing Intervene's duration, we hope to open more windows of opportunities for enemy teams to capitalize on.

    Dungeons and Raids

    • The Necrotic Wake
      • Forgotten Forgehammer, Bloody Javelin, and Discharged Anima deal 50% more damage but no longer scale with player damage modifier effects and can no longer critically strike.
        • Developers’ note: We recently discovered a bug that was causing some dungeon spells to inflict incorrect damage, and fixing this bug had a very noticeable impact on the pickups found in The Necrotic Wake. Upon closer review of these items, we've decided to make their impact more consistent while increasing their baseline power to compensate.
      • Anima Exhaust damage and healing increased by 50%.

    Items and Rewards

    • [With weekly maintenance in each region] Unchained Gladiator's Shackles of Malediction's channeled Shadow damage is now Magic dispellable (was Curse).
      • Developers’ notes: We’ve made this change to open up more counterplay options for all of our healer specs by changing the dispel type to Magic.

    Burning Crusade Classic

    • Player versus Player
      • [With weekly maintenance in each region] The formula for Arena Points has been adjusted to increase Arena Points awarded each week. This will equate to approximately 100 additional points per week for most 5v5 teams, about 88 additional points for most 3v3 teams, and about 76 more points for 2v2 teams. Teams near 1500 rating will get more, and the curve still tapers to the same maximum as before.
        • Developers' notes: In original Burning Crusade in 2007, players could expect to receive 450-500 Arena Points per week by playing at least 10 matches and winning more than 50% of the time. At that time, a team who lost most of their games could expect to get about 300 points per week. Starting from a team rating of 0 has created a points-per-win curve that has been significantly below that, so we're raising the point floor to compensate for the additional time needed to raise your rating. With this change, all 5v5 teams over 100 rating should get at least 300 points per week.

I was at Blizzard for 28 years. During that time, I tried very hard to create an environment that was safe and welcoming for people of all genders and backgrounds. I knew that it was not perfect, but clearly we were far from that goal. The fact that so many women were mistreated and were not supported means we let them down. In addition, we did not succeed in making it feel safe for people to tell their truth. It is no consolation that other companies have faced similar challenges. I wanted us to be different, better.

Harassment and discrimination exist. They are prevalent in our industry. It is the responsibility of leadership to keep all employees feeling safe, supported, and treated equitably, regardless of gender and background. It is the responsibility of leadership to stamp out toxicity and harassment in any form, across all levels of the company. To the Blizzard women who experienced any of these things, I am extremely sorry that I failed you.

I realize that these are just words, but I wanted to acknowledge the women who had awful experiences. I hear you, I believe you, and I am so sorry to have let you down. I want to hear your stories, if you are willing to share them. As a leader in our industry, I can and will use my influence to help drive positive change and to combat misogyny, discrimination, and harassment wherever I can. I believe we can do better, and I believe the gaming industry can be a place where women and minorities are welcomed, included, supported, recognized, rewarded, and ultimately unimpeded from the opportunity to make the types of contributions that all of us join this industry to make. I want the mark I leave on this industry to be something that we can all be proud of.

Update: Added Frances Townsend's statement on the lawsuit.

    J. Allen Brack's Internal Email to Blizzard Staff
Blizzard President J. Allen Brack has sent out an internal email to Blizzard staff, in which he addresses the allegations from the lawsuit filed by the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing. Here's a copy of the email, as reported by Jason Schreier.

I know many of you would like to receive more clarity. While I can't comment on the specifics of the case as it's an open investigation, what I can say is that the behavior detailed in the allegations is completely unacceptable.

    • It goes - with saying - it is completely unacceptable for anyone in the company to face discrimination or harassment.
    • It goes - with saying - that everyone should feel safe working here, whether we are on campus, at BlizzCon, or working from home.
    • It goes - with saying - it takes courage to come forward, and all claims brought to the company are investigated by internal and (when needed) external investigators. We take these claims very seriously. Claims can be made without fear of retaliation, and many times, I attend to them personally, along with our other leaders.

Stepping back - when I talked with Bobby about taking this job, one of the first things I mentioned was a revered saint of the Brack household - Gloria Steinem. Growing up, the value of women as equals, understanding the work that had been done for equal treatment, and the fact that there was still much to do, were common themes. This is just one of the reasons why the fight for equality is incredibly important to me. People with different backgrounds, views, and experiences are essential for Blizzard, our team, and our player community. I disdain "bro culture," and have spent my career fighting against it.

Iterating on our culture with the same intensity that we bring to our games is imperative, with our values acting as our north star. This is some of the most important work we do, both as professionals and human beings.

A company is more than a legal construct that exists as a piece of paper in a filing cabinet in Delaware. The people that work at the company make it what it is, through their actions and creations. Each of us plays a role in maintaining a place of safety for one other. And it is also up to each of us to continue to craft the Blizzard we want - and commit to doing our part in keeping Blizzard great but always aspiring for more.

The leadership team and I will be meeting with many of you to answer questions and discuss how we can move forward. In the meantime, I want you to know that you can talk to any manager, any HR partner, any member of the legal team, or to any one on the executive team [including, Hey J]. If you feel more comfortable talking to someone outside Blizzard, or prefer to be anonymous, you can contact the Way2Play Integrity Line.

I feel angry, sad, and a host of other emotions, but I also feel grateful to work alongside a set of leaders and thousands of employees who join me in their commitment to continuous improvement.

    Thank you Blizzard.

      • Shadow
        • Shadow Crash's (Talent) ground visual will now match the area effect.
        • Void Volley's (PvP Talent) ground visuals will now match the area effect and has more defined edges.
    • Warrior
      • Arms
        • Fixed an issue where Swift Patrol (Niya Soulbind) caused the auto-attack timer to reset.

    Creatures ad NPCs
    • Players now have a 2 second grace period to keep their vision of targets within the area contained by the Soul Chains between the Soul Cages during the Mor'geth encounter.
    • Reduced the number of Prince Renathals in Sinfall. Press F to pay respects.

    Dungeons and Raids
    • Sanctum of Domination
      • Defeating Sylvanas Windrunner on Mythic difficulty will now reward 2 Vengeance’s Reins.
      • Remnant of Ner’zhul
        • Players can no longer cause a second orb to become non-interactable while carrying an Orb of Torment.
    • Plaguefall
      • You must now defeat the first three bosses of the dungeon before the door to Margrave Stradama opens on all difficulties.
        • Developers’ note: The first two bosses of the dungeon were frequently being skipped in lower-difficulty dungeons, typically by groups who were trying to earn Renown much faster than intended. To improve players' Renown earnings, we've also added a chance for Renown to be earned by completing layers in Torghast (see hotfix below).

    Items and Rewards
    • Teleporter Repair Kits should no longer have a Unique count and will now stack to 50.
    • Repaired Riftkeys will also now stack to 50.
      • Developers’ note: Early in development, Teleporter Repair Kits and Repaired Riftkeys were only available from the vendor. Based on player feedback of not knowing if they were worth purchasing, we decided to have them drop occasionally as well. Now that these items dropped and became out of player’s control, we should have removed the unique cap on the Teleporter Repair Kits then. Also, since you have access to purchasing the Teleporter Repair Kits or Repaired Rift Keys, we are disabling them from going to mail if you loot one with a full inventory so they will no longer fill up your mailbox.

    • The item levels of Conduits sold by the Rated PvP vendor have been corrected.
    • Fixed an issue where the Salvaged Fusion Amplifier was not dropping for Marksmanship and Beastmaster Hunters.

    • Fixed an issue during “Nal’ragas” that caused internal text to be visible to users of certain nameplate addons.

    • Renown is now a possible reward from Torghast completions, with better chances at Renown coming from higher Torghast difficulties.

Quelle:

Race to World First: Sanctum of Domination
Guilds are getting even closer to a Sylvanas kill! Assuming the encounter ends at 45% health, Complexity Limit got less than 1% away from a kill earlier tonight.

        • Nimble Steps (Nadjia the Mistblade) will no longer cause excessive Immunity messages when the target is immune to its movement reduction effect.

    Dungeons and Raids
    • Sanctum of Domination
      • Remnant of Ner’zhul
        • Orbs of Torment should no longer be able to sneak in a melee attack.
      • Painsmith Raznal
        • [With regional restarts] Floor spikes created by Instruments of Pain now inflict their damage more closely aligned with the visual effect of the spikes on all difficulties.
      • Guardian of the First Ones
        • [With regional restarts] The Physical damage portion of Obliterate is now correctly increased by Obliterate’s vulnerability effect, and Obliterate’s vulnerability effect has been increased to 5000% on Heroic and Mythic difficulties.
          • Developers' note: On Heroic and Mythic difficulties, the Guardian's Sunder and Obliterate combo is meant to be shared between two tanks. Prior to this change, stringing together multiple immunity effects could allow a single tank to survive the entire encounter; this should no longer be possible. Our goal is to avoid a scenario where the optimal strategy for the encounter involves having only a single tank, unlike all other encounters in Sanctum of Domination.
      • Kel'Thuzad
        • [With regional restarts] Soul Shards will no longer despawn if the target of Soul Fracture is defeated prematurely.
      • Sylvanas Windrunner
        • Fixed an issue that could cause Sylvanas to cast a non-intermission Domination Chains prior to casting the intermission Domination Chains if pushed over the health threshold very close to the cooldown of Domination Chains.
        • Fixed an issue that allowed Thrall to affect Dark Sentinels with a knockback.
        • Bolvar should now more reliably cast Winds of Icecrown on Mythic difficulty.
        • Fixed an issue that would prevent Mawforged and Mawsworn enemies from granting on-kill procs.
        • Fixed an issue where Merciless could spawn an unreliable number of zones.
        • Fixed an issue that could cause players to teleport to the wrong location at the start of Stage 3.
        • Sylvanas should now move defeated players between platforms after casting Raze.
        • Fixed an issue that could cause Veil of Darkness to be applied to targets but do no damage.
    • Mythic+
      • Tormented Affix
        • Oros Coldheart's Frost Lance should no longer damage or knock back pets.
    • Tazavesh, the Veiled Market
      • Mailroom Mayhem
        • Fixed an issue where entering The P.O.S.T. while mounted could prevent players from picking up Unstable Goods during the encounter.

    Sanctum of Domination

    Painsmith Raznal

    • The damage associated with spike waves now more consistently matches their visual effect.

    Guardian of the First Ones
    • The Physical damage portion of Obliterate is now correctly increased by Obliterate’s vulnerability effect, and Obliterate’s vulnerability effect has been increased to 5000% on Heroic and Mythic difficulties.

    • Soul Shards will no longer despawn if the target of Soul Fracture dies prematurely.

Again, we intend the above changes to go live with the weekly reset in each region.

Sylvanas Encounter Doesn't End at 50%
Echo have brought Sylvanas down to 49.57% health, confirming that the encounter does not end at 50% health.

According to a hotfix implemented on July 6, it looks like the fight is supposed to end at 45% on Mythic difficulty: Sylvanas

    Echo's Platform Strategy Hotfixed
After coming up with a plan to push for more damage on Sylvanas, Echo's new platform strategy was quickly hotfixed.

In their new strategy, Naowh would go alone on the left platform in the last bridge split and survive tanking the Mawforged Colossus until Jaina teleported everyone to Oribos. This would let the rest 19 players save all their cooldowns for Sylvanas, instead of wasting them on adds.

After about an hour of using this strategy, Blizzard pushed a hotfix that makes the Mawforged Colossus get the Berserk buff after ~45 seconds. In the video below Naowh gets 1-shotted, and since there is no one else nearby, the Mawforged Colossus casts Hymn of the End and quickly wipes the raid.

      • Fixed an issue where Divine Resonance (Runecarving Power) would not cast Holy Shock while sitting.

    • Warlock
      • Demonology
        • Fel Obelisk (PvP Talent) will now affect all Warlock class spells, including glyphed versions of their summon spells, Summon Vilefiend (Talent), and Call Fel Lord (PvP Talent).

    • Soulbinds
      • Necrolord

      • Night Fae
        • Fixed an issue where Korayn's Hold the Line was taking longer than 5 seconds to trigger.
        • Fixed an issue where Niya's Swift Patrol would disrupt the timing of auto-attacks.

    Dungeons and Raids
    • Tazavesh, the Veiled Market
      • Mailroom Mayhem
        • Unstable Goods that are on the ground are no longer automatically picked up when players approach, and instead must be clicked on to pick them up. Unstable Goods that are thrown can still be caught by other players if they're not already carrying Unstable Goods.
          • Developers’ note: Since Tazavesh opened last week, many players have struggled to consistently pick up Unstable Goods. This issue has proven particularly elusive to track down, but we believe we've isolated the cause and are trying out a fairly substantial change to address it.

    Items and Rewards
    • Shards of Domination
      • Shard of Zed now only triggers in combat.
      • Shard of Zed now only triggers from class abilities.
        • Developers’ note: This will prevent it from triggering when using many items which are generally inconvenient for it, like Invisibility Potions.
      • Shard of Zed now more smartly filters what targets it attempts to drain life from.

    Torghast, Tower of the Damned
    • Anima Powers
      • Druid
        • Fixed an issue where Celestial Spirits (Runecarving Power) could unintentionally reduce the cooldown of Convoke the Spirits (Night Fae Ability) to 0 seconds when equipping multiple Coalesced Spirit Droplet anima powers in Torghast, Tower of the Damned.
